SuperStallions Of The Net held their annual Winter Nationals on Saturday, November 9th at Cecil County Dragway in Rising Sun, Maryland.  This event was renamed The Andrew Bauer Memorial Nationals in memory of our late friend Andrew “Krimpet” Bauer.  Krimpet was killed in an automobile accident in the early morning hours on Sunday, September 1st.  In his honor, a moment of silence was observed at the beginning of the event.   Then, driving the Cobra he had previously owned, his parents made the first pass of the day in his honor wearing “afro” wigs which was their son’s trademark.
The SuperStallions events are held twice a year at Cecil County Dragway. One event is held in the spring and the second event is held in the fall.  The track activities are organized by Bill Tumas (qwik huh) and run by Bill and his staff during the day of the event.  Bill’s wife Tanya manages the gate the day of the event.  Because many of the participants travel from out of state Glenn Sullivan (Glenn Sullivan) has taken on the responsibility for making the hotel accommodations for everyone and completing their reservations.  With the help of his wife Dianna, Glenn sets up a party room at the hotel that is stocked with snacks and tasty cold beverages on both Friday and Saturday nights.  Glenn also works with a local caterer that provides an informal dinner on Friday night and a more formal sit down dinner on Saturday night.  Without the hard work and dedication of Bill and Glenn, the Nats would never have grown to be the event that it is today.
Many of our members set new personal bests at the event.  Spence Hart (Spence) backed up the 8.99 pass that he had run a few weeks prior at Englishtown by running 8.96 @ 154.62 mph with an incredible 60’ time of 1.40.  Spence has been working hard all season getting his combo just right.  He has certainly come a long way since the opening NMRA race in Bradenton where he qualified with an average time of 9.36.  Spence finished third in points in the NMRA Drag Radial class this season.  Congratulations Spence!
Bob Lunner (rel3rd) is famous for the “Barney Car”.  Barney was a 1986 LX that ran a best of 10.24 @ 133.10 mph.  Bob recently traded Barney for his newest toy, which is a stock 1994 Fobra.  Bob had to get used to the new car because it had an extra pedal he wasn’t used too.  Of course he had to add a little extra kick to the car, so he added a NOS  "Dry Kit" adjustable nitrous system.  Bob ran a best of 14.02 @ 97 mpg n/a and a best of 12.49 @ 110 mph on the laughing gas.  Not too shabby for an otherwise 100% stock motor!
Mike Romano (saleen90181) spent the past several months getting his combo straightened out.  It consists of a Junkyard motor with stock cam, new Edelbrock heads, and an Explorer intake topped off with a Vortech S-trim for a few extra ponies.  On Tuesday before the event Mike’s car was strapped on the dyno and made 467 rwhp before blowing both head gaskets.  Luckily Jimmy Chahalis was able to tear down the car and get it back together within 48 hours.  The car was then strapped back on the dyno where it made a very impressive 493 rwhp with the stock cam with a conservative tune. With some race gas this car would easily top the 500 rwhp mark.  Mike set a new personal best at the Nats, running 12.3 @ 117 mph with a 1.97 60’ time.
Lane Palmer (FastLane) split his stock blocked 306 at the Spring event.  At that time he was running a Vortech S-trim supercharger.  Lane decided to kick it up a notch with his new combo.  Lane decided to use the FMS Sportsman block that he had sitting in the garage for some extra insurance.  He also decided to ditch the Vortech in favor of a PTK Pro Street Turbo Kit.   Lane brought the new combo untested and had no idea how it would run.  On his second pass the car got a little out of shape but Lane did not let out of it.  He was rewarded with a 10.08 @ 137 mph.  Not too shabby for just the second pass.  Once he gets the combo dialed it, it will be a consistent 9 second runner.  Congrats Lane!!
Did anyone hear what Jules ran??? Julian Moore (Jules95GT) had always talked about joining the power adder guys.  This year he finally gave in and added a Zex NOS system to his car.  Recently at Mustang Magic the car spun the wheels at 350 rwhp.  Jules ran a new best of 12.72 @ 110 mph with a 60’ time of 1.82.  There is now a certain slightly faster, stock-headed, yellow car that now wants to grudge run Jules in the spring.
Jeff Burbank (NO MANRZ) has spent the past few months tweeking the combo in his 1991 GT convertible.  His car is very impressive considering it is a heavy convertible that has always been capable of running 10’s.  Jeff recently made 448 rwhp on the dyno at La Rocca’s.  Jeff swapped intakes, gears, and had is converter re-stalled a couple of times trying to get the combo just right.  Jeff’s hard work was rewarded with a new best of 10.77 @ 126.44 mph.  To Jeff’s delight his 60’ times were back to consistent 1.5’s and he ran consistent 10 second passes all day long.  Jeff is now a member of the infamous “Head Gasket Club” Class of 2002 as he popped a driver’s side head gasket by the end of the day.
One of the legends of racing at Cecil is that there is “magical fair dust air”.  People always love to run there because they always run their best times.  This was not the case in the past for Mike Mohring (itslegal), who always ran better at his hometown track of Englishtown, NJ.  Mike’s luck finally changed this time out.  Mike clicked his way to a new wheels up best of 10.49 @ 128.59 with an amazing 1.49 60’ time.  Mike is now the second fastest member of the Track Toys Club.
Mike Siska (EECDOC) continued to impress us with his 1995 Thunderbird.  Mike finally achieved his goal and broke into the 11’s.  He ran 11.92 @ 113.9 mph.  This is rather impressive considering his bird weighs 3,950 pounds and rolls on drag radials.  Mike’s previous best was 12.69 @ 107.7 mph with the stock long block and 8 psi of boost.  Mike has since upgraded to a custom built Romeo PI engine and an Allen kit putting out 10 psi of boost.  Mike is hoping to better his 11.92 with some more fine tuning of the new combination.
The most amazing accomplishment was Brian Kirk’s 1983 convertible.  Brian’s car was just a shell a month before the event.  It had no motor, no tranny, no interior, no wheels, and was barely a roller.  Working around the clock in the Track Toys Garage with the help of the likes of Bill Tumas, Rich Nagle, Brian Wilson, Jimmy “Mustang God” Chahalis, and Scott Lehr Brian were able to transform this shell into a running car with the complete drivetrain from Bill Tumas’ former GT.  Two nights before the event Brian and Jimmy C worked until 3 am and were finally able to fire the car up.  The first time the car was driven it was moved onto the trailer Friday morning.  Friday afternoon the car was tuned on the trailer at the hotel.  On Saturday morning at the track a new driver’s side door was installed courtesy of Brian Alloway and the car was ready to get teched in.  The car was not the prettiest car to ever dawn the 1320, but Brian was just happy to get it to run and make it to the event.  All the hard work was rewarded with a best run of 12.9 with the wheels in the air.
Several other members set new personal bests.  Rich Smith (blk88) set a new wheel standing 60’ best of 1.56.  Dan Hyland (DANCOBRA96) ran 11.37 @ 126.28 mph with a 1.8 60’ in his Vortech equipped cobra.  Sean Belden (ConvertedBrandRice) ran 14.48 @ 96.11 mph in his 1995 GT with an AOD-E.   John Rubis (BlueVenom) ran 12.58 @ 109.61 mph.  Zach Young(v6stanger) ran an impressive 13.5 in his v6 Stang with Nitrous.  Ricki Hawver (Rick91GT) beat his previous best of 11.23 @123.8 mph by running 11.11 @ 127.8 mph with a 1.78 60’ time in his t-5 shifted sprayed 91 GT.  On a Mustang Dyno Rick’s car made 392.5 rwhp and a whopping 734.8 rwtq and the bottle ran empty during the run so there is still plenty more on reserve!
